Volunteers Initiative Nepal, with the help of local community members, has successfully installed 100 toilets for 100 families serving 600 people. WASH stand for water, sanitation and hygiene the biggest component of which is permanent toilets for each family.
Before construction began many meetings were held to find out what the community wanted and educate them in how to use their new facilities for a healthy and happier life. Families helped with the building process and gathering of local building materials to augment the installation team and keep costs to a minimum. WHN provided a $15,800 grant which was 47% of the budget. VIN provided $1186 and the local community in Okhaldhunga provided the other 50% of the budget.
These toilets are long lasting structured made of cement blocks, rock, metal roofing, cement floors and a proper septic tank system. They should serve these families for decades. Training was also given in the care and maintenance of the system.
Relief aid, while well intentioned, often ends up in the pockets of corrupt local bureaucrats and/or multinational contracts, with very little reaching the people that actually need it. Ensure that your contributions reach those in need.
